Considering an IUD but feeling anxious about the procedure? You’re not alone—and at Women First, we’re doing something about it.
We understand that the idea of pain or discomfort can be a significant barrier when it comes to choosing an intrauterine device (IUD) for birth control. That’s why we offer Nitrous Oxide—also known as “laughing gas”—to help patients feel more relaxed, calm, and in control during their IUD insertion.
Why Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide is a safe, fast-acting option that helps reduce anxiety and discomfort during minor procedures. Its safety has been proven in dental care and pediatric medicine, and now, we’re bringing its benefits to reproductive healthcare, ensuring your safety and comfort.
Patients who choose nitrous oxide for IUD procedures often report:
- Feeling more relaxed and at ease
- Lowered sensitivity to cramping and pain
- A quicker, more positive experience overall
Most importantly, nitrous oxide is quickly reversible. You can drive yourself home afterward, and the effects wear off within minutes after the procedure, allowing you to return to your normal activities without delay.
Reducing Fear Around IUD Insertion
The decision to get an IUD shouldn’t be overshadowed by fear of pain. Unfortunately, for many women, that fear can delay or prevent access to a highly effective, long-term birth control option.
At Women First, we take a compassionate approach by offering multiple comfort options, including:
- Nitrous Oxide
- Local numbing medication
- Cervical softening meds
- IV sedation (if needed)
Whether you’ve had a problematic experience before or this is your first time considering an IUD, we’re here to walk you through it and help you feel confident in your decision.
What to Expect During the Procedure
An IUD insertion typically takes just a minute or two. The total time is about 15-20 minutes from start to finish. We start by answering questions, signing the consent, and examining the position of your uterus. We give the numbing medicine a little time to work. If you choose nitrous oxide, you’ll inhale the gas through a mask just before and during the procedure. You’ll remain awake, aware, and able to communicate with your provider—but feel calmer and more comfortable throughout. After the IUD is placed, we give you as much time as you need to recover.
After placing the IUD, the nitrous oxide is turned off, and the effects wear off almost immediately. You can return to normal activities shortly afterward.
