Preconceptional and Genetic Counseling
Preconceptional counseling is available to patients planning a future pregnancy. We will evaluate your medical, obstetrical, family, and genetic history as well as life-style factors in order to identify potential problems during pregnancy. In addition, dietary recommendations and healthy pre-pregnancy behaviors will be discussed.
Preconceptional counseling benefits all patients contemplating pregnancy but is essential for patients with serious medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, prior blood clotting disorder, severe kidney, lung or heart disorders and also for those with a prior pregnancy complicated by preterm labor, preeclampsia, stillbirth or delivery of a child with birth defects.

Genetic testing and counseling is provided in our office and is appropriate for a number of individuals including:
Ideally, genetic testing and counseling is performed prior to pregnancy but can also be provided in early pregnancy. It is important to obtain all medical records pertaining to the subject and send copies to our office to allow the physician to review the information prior to your appointment.
All pregnant patients are routinely offered screening for Down syndrome and spina bifida. These tests are optional and will be discussed at your first prenatal visit.
